Meet the Team - Andrew Mostyn

Why did you get into Optics?

Work experience at my local independent Opticians in Arbroath during my 4th year at school. Had an interest in science at school and I loved the range of gadgets but also the connection that he had with all his patients.

Where did you study? / What qualifications do you have?

Glasgow Caledonian university, 1st class honours degree in optometry. Liked the city so much I haven't left!

How long have you been with Urquhart Opticians and what do you enjoy most about your job?

I'm the newest member of the Optometry team, joining in March 2021. I’ve enjoyed getting to know all the staff and starting to build up my own patient base in Kilmarnock. It has been nice seeing some familiar faces already who I have been testing for over 15 years in my previous roles, hopefully I can continue making that connection with the patients at Urquharts too.

What is your favourite brand of eyewear and why?

Rayban - My son has worn spectacles since the age of 2 and I’ve always managed to get him great colourful fun glasses in the junior range, their sunglass range are fab too.

What is your most memorable patient experience?

Early on in my career when I was just getting used to working unsupervised, having to refer a patient urgently for brain surgery was both fairly stressful in terms of how to explain the situation to the patient but rewarding at knowing the positive outcome eventually reached. Thankfully I haven’t encountered situations like this very often but enforces the importance of eye examinations.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I have two young children so family time competes with running! I’m a member of Giffnock North running club and have completed many 10k’s and half marathons. I'm also a parent helper coaching the under 11’s at the club. I love to read, listen to music and hope to get back to skiing at some point in the future. Current project is passing our love of the mountains of Scotland onto the kids.

Where is your favourite holiday destination?

Whistler in Canada for skiing, but a cottage in the countryside anywhere in rural Scotland with hills or a beach (or both) nearby for a family holiday is perfect.

What is your favourite movie or book?

Book – One Fine Day In The Middle Of the Night Christopher Brookmyre, film – not an Oscar’s worthy film but have enjoyed rewatching all the Marvel Avengers arc with the kids recently.

Tell us your favourite quote?

“You’re going to need a bigger boat” - Jaws.

Best piece of advice you have ever been give?

Always smile. Applies to work and running – uses less muscles than frowning and can have a positive impact on those around you. Unfortunately wearing a mask negates this currently!

One interesting fact about yourself?

I had planned on doing my first and possibly last Marathon for my 40th birthday last April. Covid allowing, it will hopefully take place in Stirling this October. Watch this space.
