Meet The Team - Ian Donnelly
Why did you get in to Optics?
Many years ago, I saw a job advert with Urquhart Opticians in an Optics Lab. I have always been good with my hands, making and fixing things. So I decided why not, and now over 30 years later I still love what I am doing.
Where did you study? / What qualifications do you have?
I have a background in engineering having served my time as a maintenance fitter. I then moved into Optics and I have been running the lab for Urquhart Opticians for 33 years. Over the years I have seen many changes and I have worked with all sorts of lenses. I estimate I have cut more than 250,000 lenses during my time as a Lab Technician!
How long have you been with Urquhart Opticians and what do you enjoy most about your job?
As I said, I’ve worked here for over 30 years and I enjoy working with the team, we all get on really well. But there is no doubt that the most job satisfaction comes when you make a stunning pair of glasses that you know the patient is going to love wearing. Optics can be challenging due to the physics of some lenses and we are genuinely passionate about delivering the best job that we can for each patient. I’ve also salvaged a few pairs of glasses in my time as well! If it can be fixed, I will fix it!
What is your favourite brand of eyewear and why?
Any frame that is easy to glaze! No only joking, I obviously enjoy working with our top brands – Oakley, Ray Ban and the like – because they are the best quality and so deliver the best job. My own reading glasses are Oakley, but I am on the look out for a new pair, I just need to get my eyes tested again!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I like football and I support Kilmarnock – you’ll hear many a cheer or a groan from the lab on a Saturday afternoon. I also enjoy DIY and going out walking – I walk to work most mornings.
Where is your favourite holiday destination?
Florida – I’ve been a few times and I love going to the theme parks with my family.
What is your favourite movie?
I like Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks, so any movie with them in it.
What is your favourite book?
I like Stephen King books and have just finished his collection of short stories called ‘A Bazaar of Bad Dreams’ but without doubt my favourite one was the time travel thriller 11.22.63.
One interesting fact about yourself?
I’ve just recently become a Grandad so I’m really enjoying spending time with my Grandaughter.
