Why did you get in to Optics?
After a career break for family and moving to a new town, I joined Urquhart Opticians part-time, initially to update my skills and to join the local community. Upon joining, this opened up a whole new field of technical and clinical learning for me which I found that I loved.
Where did you study? / What qualifications do you have?
I have been on several training courses with the company but I am qualified in both Level 5 and Level 7 Optical Care.
How long have you been with Urquhart Opticians and what do you enjoy most about your job?
I joined the business in 2004. I really enjoy being involved in the provision and administration of Low Vision Aids which improves the quality of life for visually impaired patients, some of whom have quite complex needs.
What is your favourite brand of eyewear and why?
Ray Ban! In my opinion, they have been producing high quality, iconic designs and timeless classic styling in eyewear since 1937.
What is your most memorable patient experience?
There have been many instances over the years that have been fun and rewarding but it is always great when a returning patient asks for my help, either in choosing or fitting spectacles because they trust me to help.
Outside of Work
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Reading - especially detective novels and historical fiction. I also enjoy a logic puzzle to distract my brain.
Where is your favourite holiday destination?
Rio De Janeiro - just like Troon but with more sun!
What is your favourite movie?
Dracula - Vampires can love too
What is your favourite book?
Catch 22 - it made me laugh out loud on the bus.
One interesting fact about yourself?
I was nearly rammed by a mother elephant in Kenya because her baby was on the other side of the track that we were on. Slow reversing by our driver saved the day!
