3D Vision for Kilmarnock Businesses

Two Kilmarnock based businesses have embarked on a collaboration to develop 3D printing applications in optometry.

Urquhart Opticians and Ivory Solutions are exploring how the latest 3D printing technology can be utilised to develop eyewear created to the specific dimensions and design requirements of each individual client. The first prototype frames have now been developed, setting an initial benchmark for the project. The partners are now working on refining the application to create comfortable, perfectly fitting frames.

The collaboration came about following a meeting between Peter Telfer of Urquhart Opticians and Ian Ivory of Ivory Solutions at a business networking event.

Peter Telfer of Urquhart Opticians explains: “The project is very much in its early stages, but we’re thrilled to be working with another local business to explore how this emerging technology can enhance our patient experience.

“When I met Ian earlier this year, I was fascinated to learn of the recent advances in 3D printing. We quickly realised the potential this technology could have for optometry. At Urquhart Opticians, we are proud to offer an exceptional range of frames from classic brands as well as exciting new designers. We’re equally proud to provide a personal fitting service, ensuring frames are comfortable and fit well, as well as complimenting an individual’s style and colouring. However, this new 3D technology brings the opportunity to develop bespoke frames, created to fit the patient perfectly by considering every contour of your face shape.”

Ian Ivory of Ivory Solutions added: “3D printing has advanced greatly and is now more accessible than ever before. The potential for this technology is huge and we are finding demand for 3D printers is growing in a wide range of sectors and industries. By speaking to Peter, we realised this could revolutionise how optometrists dispense frames, providing eyewear created specifically for the individual wearer. Our first prototype has now been 3D printed and we are looking forward to refining it together with the team at Urquhart Opticians.”

Award-winning Urquhart Opticians was established in 1916 and has practices in  Troon, Prestwick, Glasgow and at their headquarters in Kilmarnock.  www.urquhart-opticians.co.uk .
