Why I Chose Optometry...

When I was only 4 years old, I had surgery on my right eye to correct a squint and have worn glasses ever since. Attending the Opticians was an annual event (or more if I lost/broke my glasses) and I loved it. I loved the environment and listening to how everything worked. Reaching the age of about 15 I decided to try contact lenses for first time, this extra trip to Urquharts had me inspired and thinking, maybe this is for me. Optometry is such an interesting field with lots of different ways to help people. So I applied for a Saturday job at Urquharts and have never looked back.

Since starting the course back in 2017 I have loved studying Optometry at Glasgow Caledonian University. As well as the many great friends I have made, my eyes were opened wide to the world of Optometry, and the millions of things I have learned. I would say my favourite part would be the practical side of things. In third year, I have gotten the chance to perform full eye exams on volunteer patients and I truly believe this is the best way to learn and gain experience which will help me continuing in fourth year and beyond.

I am particularly interested in contact lenses; it has been my favourite module of third year and I have learned a lot about the different types of lenses available and the benefits of particular types for different patients. When I was younger, I never thought I could wear lenses as I have a complex prescription but almost everyone can use contacts! People may not know there are specific contact lenses for children, that some people receive contact lenses from the NHS in Ayrshire & Arran because they have complicated needs, or even that you can get multifocal contact lenses which work like varifocals.

As I work across all our practices, I get to see all the different collections. I have worn glasses since I was 4 years old and need to carefully select my frames due to my prescription. Currently I have 3 pairs, I like to change it up but my favourites have to be my Face a Face pair. Ever since I got them, I've had nothing but compliments. I love the way they look and feel.

I’m looking forward to continuing my studies and seeing all our clients in practice.
